History

On August 11, 2004,
Governor Bob Riley passed
Executive Order 22
to create the Black Belt Action
Commission.

On June 22, 2005, Governor Bob Riley
added $16 million in State funds and
directed the Alabama Department of
Transportation to expedite the I-85
Extension study process.

•On
August 11, 2005, the Alabama Department
of Transportation went under contract
with Volkert and Associates to complete
the Corridor Study and Environmental
Impact Statement.
Project
Summary
-
•The proposed action
is to construct a multilane limited access
freeway to provide a connecting link from
I-59/20 near the Mississippi State line and
I-85 in Montgomery, AL. The
proposed highway will be approximately 140
miles in length. The new interstate
connector will provide enhanced economic
opportunities for the
Black Belt Counties.

•The current project
includes a
Corridor Study
and the preparation of an
Environmental Impact Statement.
As the initial steps are taken in
this phase of study, the project area will
be investigated and alternate alignments
will be developed and evaluated.
